About

One of the challenges of buying a computer online or in-store today is that consumers have so many options that it leads to indecision. Overwhelming consumers with information and choices creates a state called “information blindness.” Powered by a recommendation engine designed to help consumers decide which device fits their lifestyle and usage needs, we partnered with Microsoft and Staples to create an in-store digital tool aimed at simplifying the shopping experience.

The process

Starting with a dataset of available SKUs, we mapped each product into a matrix of characteristics and features. This gave us a framework to begin exploring how to design the recommendation engine. Physical prototyping became an important process in creative process, validating interaction models and user flow.

Meet your match

Through a series of six qualifying questions, we designed a simple user flow that walks customers through potential use cases. It then recommends a range of products across each form factor, based on their needs. Tapping into a specific model brings up more details. The kiosk is also connected to store inventory and displays whether or not the product is in stock.

Through Staple’s online branded stores, we created an accompanying browser experience so that customers could experience Microsoft Match anywhere, including at home.
